2 890 men circumcised in Oshana Region: Aupokolo

ONGWEDIVA: A total of 2 890 men have been circumcised in the Oshana Region, and not 289 as reported during the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) official launch at Ongwediva last Friday.

Rectifying the mistake on Monday, Assistant National Coordinator of the VMMC, Mekondjo Aupokolo told Nampa 2 890 men were circumcised in the Oshana Region since the inception of the VMMC programme in 2009.

Aupokolo said the VMMC programme targets 29 886 men to be circumcised in the Oshana Region alone by 2015/16.

Health and Social Services Minister Dr Richard Kamwi officially launched the VMMC for the Oshana Region.

Kamwi told his audience that the VMMC programme was rolled out to all 33 district hospitals in Namibia, and 16 341 men have been circumcised countrywide so far.

“In addition, more than 260 healthcare workers have been trained to provide VMMC services as part of the comprehensive HIV prevention package,” he said.

The Health and Social Services Ministry has set the national target for VMMC at 330 128 men to be circumcised in the country by 2015/16.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in 2007 made joint recommendations for member states to include male circumcision in their HIV-prevention packages in addition to efforts being made to address the HIV epidemic.
