A female student arrested by Police after she strangled her newborn baby to death shortly after birth

WINDHOEK: A 21-year-old female student was arrested by the Oshana Police at the Ongwediva Vocational Centre (VTC) over the weekend after she allegedly strangled her newborn baby to death shortly after birth.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Sergeant Slogan Matheus told journalists at the weekly crime briefing here yesterday the student gave birth to a healthy baby girl at an unknown time on Friday.

She then allegedly strangled the baby by tying leggings around her neck.

She dumped the baby’s body in a dustbin.

The student has been admitted to the Oshakati State Hospital under strict police guard.

Police investigations are now underway to establish the exact circumstances that led to her allegedly killing the baby.
