aby girl drowns in water bucket at Okondjatu

OTJIWARONGO; A 12-month-old baby girl drowned in a bucket of water on Tuesday at Okondjatu village in the Okakarara Constituency.

Okondjatu is situated some 100 kilometres south-east of the town of Okakarara.

The Namibian Police Force’s (NamPol) Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Wednesday that the deceased was identified as Muhupua Kauningua.

Her close relatives have been informed of the death.

“Kauningua was apparently playing with other children behind her grandmother’s house, and she is said to have fallen and drowned in a 20-litre bucket full of water,” Mbeha explained.

She said the other children rushed to the baby girl’s grandmother and called on her to come to the baby’s aid. The elderly woman quickly removed the baby from the water bucket, but at that time Kauningua was already said to have been unconscious.

She was rushed to the Okondjatu Clinic where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

No foul play is suspected, and Police investigations continue.
