Accident Claims One, Injures 23

A HEAD-ON collision along the Eenhana road on Tuesday claimed the life of a 66-year-old woman and injured 23 others, the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund announced yesterday.

The chief executive officer of the Motor Vehicle Fund (MVA), Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, told a press briefing yesterday that the accident, involving a Toyota bakkie and Tata pickup truck happened at about 18h20 on Tuesday between the Onakalunga and Edimba villages.

“According to information reported to our call centre, the two pickups bakkies were involved in a head-on collision,” she said.

Martins-Hausiku said that one of the vehicles was overloaded with 21 occupants. It is also suspected that the driver of the Tata bakkie, who fled the scene after the accident, does not have a valid driver’s licence.

“Preliminary reports indicate that one person died at the scene of the crash, while four people sustained severe injuries and 19 others were moderately injured,” she said.

The seriously injured persons were transported to Ongwediva Medipark, while one of the drivers was transferred to the Oshakati State Hospital.

“Among the moderately injured were two infants under one year. The rest of the injured persons were ferried to Eenhana State Hospital,” she said.

Martins-Hausiku urged road users to exercise extreme caution and guard against disregarding road traffic regulations such as overloading and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

“The Fund has on numerous occasions called on employers to refrain from transporting their workers in trucks and other vehicles not fitted with proper seating facilities and seat belts,” she said.

She said the MVA will ensure that all the injured people receive appropriate medical treatment.
