Accused Denies Murder, Fake Suicide Charges

A GROOT Aub resident accused of staging a fake suicide scene in an attempt to conceal the murder of his girlfriend pleaded not guilty to three charges in the Windhoek High Court yesterday.

With the start of his trial after close to three and a half years in custody, Gregory Kangandjera (37) told Judge Nate Ndauendapo he was not guilty of charges of murder, assault, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice, or attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice.

The prosecution’s first witness in Kangandjera’s trial is expected to be called to the witness stand today.

Kangandjera’s defence lawyer, Joshua Kaumbi, told Judge Ndauendapo that his client’s defence would not be revealed after his plea, but that it would become apparent during the trial.

The prosecution is alleging that Kangandjera murdered his girlfriend, Loretta Kruger (32), at Groot Aub during the period of 13 to 18 November 2010, and that he then tied a rope around her neck and attached the other end to a tree branch in an attempt to make it appear as if she had committed suicide by hanging herself.

Kangandjera allegedly also told the police and other people that Kruger had committed suicide.

The prosecution is further alleging that Kangandjera assaulted a man he had found in Kruger’s company at a Groot Aub drinking place called Mafia Bar on 13 November 2010.

Kangandjera allegedly also assaulted Kruger by kicking and beating her, and thereafter failed to get medical attention for her while he kept her in his house. He killed Kruger by strangling her, the prosecution is alleging.

State aocate Palmer Kumalo is prosecuting.
