WINDHOEK: The achievements of the Namibian athletes who participated in the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana last month were celebrated by the Namibian National Olympic Committee (NNOC) on Friday.

The Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Youth Games took place from 22 to 31 May 2014, and 61 athletes represented Namibia.

The Namibian team returned from the Games with 14 medals and an impressive 10th position in the medal rankings.

A statement availed to Nampa by the NNOC on Monday said all Namibian Youth Games’ performers were awarded certificates from the 2014 organisers of the Games, as well as a financial incentive and bonus awarded by the NNOC during the event at Olympic House, the committee’s headquarters.

The third edition of the African Youth Games will be hosted in the Algerian capital, Algiers in 2018.

They will once again be aimed at athletes aged 14 to 18, offering them a platform to prepare for the Olympic Games in 2016; contribute to the development of sport; and foster Olympic values on the African continent.
