African Stars Close in On the Leaders

African Stars closed the gap on the leaders with a convincing 3-0 victory against Blue Waters on Saturday.

After a goalless first half Joslin Kamatuka opened the scoring when he headed in from a corner early in the second half, while two fine solo goals by Edy Mangoumou and Johannes Seibeb sealed a comfortable victory.

Stars remain fourth on the log on 13 points, four behind the leaders Black Africa, with two games in hand.

Blue Waters had an early chance when a bicycle kick by Immanuel Ambolo was tipped over the bar, while at the other end, Stars striker Heinrich Kazerua shot wide from a quick counterattack.

As the game progressed more chances went Stars’ way, as Joslin Kamatuka came close, while Dennis Tjetinda hit the crossbar with a cross from the right wing. Just before halftime Edy Mangoumou shot inches wide from a clearance from a corner.

Joslin Kamatuka opened Stars’ account 12 minutes after the break when he headed in from a corner by Edwin Korukuve.

Kamatuka once again came close when he shot narrowly wide after being put clear by Korukuve, while Blue Waters defender Johannes Nambuli made a fine tackle on a flying Korukuve in the box.

Stars’ pressure finally told on 74 minutes when Edy Mangoumou scored a stunning goal with a 30 metre shot that hit the roof of the net.

Five minutes later it was the turn of Johannes Seibeb when a cracking shot from the edge of the box hit the back of the net to make it 3-0.

In the late game at the Independence Stadium, Tura Magic and Eleven Arrows played to a drab goalless draw.

There were hardly any chances of not in a dull first half, and the game only came alive in the last quarter of the match.

Magic’s midfielder Robinson Iyambo volleyed inches over the bar on 62 minutes, while Peter Shalulile shot narrowly wide after being put clear by Junias Theophelus on 72 minutes.

Magic’s best chance came on 80 minutes when Shalulile hit the post, while Romeo Kasume headed just over the bar in the final stages.

At the Sam Nujoma Stadium, United Stars shocked Civics with a 2-1 victory, while Citizens beat Julinho 3-1.
