African Stars crowned 2014-15 NPL champions

WINDHOEK: African Stars Football Club are the new champions of the Namibia Premier League (NPL) 2014/15 season after thrashing Rebels 4-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Sunday.

Stars went into the game on the back of a 1-2 defeat by Tigers the previous day and only needed a win to be crowned champions.

Black Africa had won the NPL title for the previous four seasons.

Stars dominated play in the centre of the field, ultimately opening scoring in the 28th minute through their striker Bradley Wermann, who headed in a goal after the Rebels’ goalkeeper David Peterson missed to punch away a cross from the right wing by Treasure Kaupirura in the box.

The half time score was 1-0 in favour of Stars.

In the second half, Wermann scored two more goals in the 50th and 67th minute.

Godwin Jena added the final nail into Rebels’ coffin with his additional-time goal to end Stars’ NPL trophy drought since the 2009/10 season.

Speaking to the media after the game, Stars’ coach Woody Jacobs said he was delighted to lift the NPL title with his team and credit should be given to the players and management who made everything possible.

“I dedicate this trophy to Sydney Martin, our former chairperson who worked so hard into bringing me to the club. He also invested a lot of his money expecting nothing in return. I wish he is happy wherever he is finding himself right now, as he made sure the team was capable of competing and ending Black Africa’s four-season dominance in the NPL,” said Jacobs.

The coach was happy that his players, who some people did not believe in, have finally achieved what nobody expected they could.

“Winning the league with a team that people usually referred to as an ‘old-age home’ is really amazing because if you look at the age of these players, nobody gave them a chance to play as impressive as they just did because they are old, but they delivered what was expected of them. I am so happy for them and the team’s supporters,” he charged.

Stars will play their last game of the 2014/15 season next week on a date still to be confirmed by the NPL.
