African Stars Football Club are new champions of NPL

WINDHOEK: African Stars Football Club are the new champions of the Namibia Premier League (NPL) 2014/15 season after thrashing Rebels 4-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium yesterday.

Stars went into the game on the back of a 1-2 defeat by Tigers the previous day and only needed a win to be crowned champions.

Black Africa had won the NPL title for the previous four seasons.

Stars dominated play in the centre of the field, ultimately opening scoring in the 28th minute through their striker Bradley Wermann, who headed in a goal after the Rebels’ goalkeeper David Peterson missed to punch away a cross from the right wing by Treasure Kaupirura in the box.

The half time score was 1-0 in favour of Stars.

In the second half, Wermann scored two more goals in the 50th and 67th minute.

Godwin Jena added the final nail into Rebels’ coffin with his additional-time goal to end Stars’ NPL trophy drought since the 2009/10 season.

Speaking to the media after the game, Stars’ coach Woody Jacobs said he was delighted to lift the NPL title with his team and credit should be given to the players and management who made everything possible.

The coach was happy that his players, who some people did not believe in, have finally achieved what nobody expected they could.

Stars will play their last game of the 2014/15 season next week on a date still to be confirmed by the NPL.
