African Stars Go Top

African Stars replaced Black Africa at the top of the MTC Namibia Premier League log after a last minute 2-1 victory against Unam at the Independence Stadium on Sunday night.

Substitute Godwin Jena played a major role in their victory, providing the assist for their opening goal and then scoring the winner a minute before full time.

Joseph Kuugongelwa gave Unam an early lead only to be ruled offside, while Edwin Korukuve and Meraai Swartbooi both came close for Stars.

Chances continued thick and fast as Unam’s keeper Lukas Hashiti made a point blank save from a shot by Heinrich Kazerua, while at the other end, Stars’ keeper Athiel Mbaha made a point blank save to deny Uauanisiua Tjiposa.

Edwin Korukuve hit the post for Stars in the second half while Tjiposa continued to threaten for Unam, forcing two saves from Mbaha.

Stars finally took the lead with 15 minutes remaining when substitute Godwin Jena found an unmarked Korukuve who beat Hashiti from close range.

Unam came back gly and substitute Clarence Foroma equalised with four minutes to go. Unam captain Amy Savihemba had a header cleared from a corner but Foroma followed up to slam the rebound into the net.

In the hectic final minutes, another shot by Foroma hit the upright, but it was Stars who had the final say when Jena hit the post and then followed up to stab the rebound into the net.

The victory put Stars at the top of the log on 20 points, one ahead of Black Africa, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Tura Magic.

Unam, meanwhile, suffered their second defeat of the weekend, after losing 3-2 to Tura Magic on Saturday, and dropped down to sixth place on 15 points.

Unam coach Marcello Wakadumo said a lack of experience had cost them dearly.

“The game was a fierce battle, but when you equalise in the last quarter of the match and then you slip up and lose concentration, that is the result. But I must say, even though we conceded that second goal, we conducted ourselves very well and Im very proud of my boys,” he said.

Wakadumo was however not too concerned by their two defeats.

“Sometimes you need luck in football but it looks like luck was not on our side in the last few games. The same things keep on happening, but when you are not mentally g, this is what happens. Things are not going that well for us at the moment but there is still a long way to go and we will pick up,” he said.

In the BA-Tura Magic encounter, winger Ananias Gebhardt put Black Africa ahead after only 10 minutes when he outflanked the defence on the left wing and sent in a low shot that hit the back of the net.

Black Africa had more chances, with Roger Katjiteo and Bryan Bantam both missing from close range, while at the other end, Kalusha Alhassan and Itamuna Keimuine gave BA’s defence a tough time.

Tura Magic grabbed the equaliser on 76 minutes when a shot by Alhassan hit the post and Theophelus Junias followed up to slam the rebound into the net.

The result sees Black Africa moving down to second place on 19 points, while Tura Magic are seventh on 15 points.

In earlier matches at the Independence stadium, Civics held third-placed Tigers to a goalless draw while bottom-placed Rebels scored their first victory of the season, beating Citizens 1-0.

In Walvis Bay, Blue Waters beat United Stars 4-0 to move up to fourth position on 17 points, but Eleven Arrows suffered their second defeat of the weekend, losing 1-0 to Julinho Sporting.

Orlando Pirates scored a morale boosting 3-0 victory away to Benfica in Tsumeb to go fifth on the log on 16 points, while Mighty Gunners beat Touch amp Go 3-1 in Otavi.
