Air Namibia Halts Ghana Flights

AIR Namibia has suspended flights to Ghana citing operational challenges.

The struggling airline’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Wimpie van Vuuren, confirmed the abrupt suspension.

ldquoWe have gone thorough consultations before reaching the decision to suspend the route to Accra but we never know it is a dynamic industry we might as well at a later stage reconsider it,” the official said.

“Among major challenges to the route has been the unavailability of a visa office in Ghana and people had to go to Abuja to acquire documentation and this challenged most travellers.rdquo

Although the company could not give a breakdown of the loses encountered during the five years of service on the Accra-Windhoek route the revealed that the company has also faltered to heavy competition from European and Asian airlines.

Air Namibia has been experiencing a raft of challenges for the past few years where they made perennial losses and relied heavily on that country’s government for bailouts.

The Namibian airliner also confirmed it had not been spared by the challenge from South African, Kenyan and Ethiopian Airways which, enjoy a heavy monopoly of the African routes.

According to the airliner the decision to terminate the Accra route has also been necessitated by a refined business plan that aims to focus on better routes that have potential to expand the small airliner’s route network and revenue inflows.

Air Namibia has also been in a bid to revamp its rather old fleet in the past few months in a bid to improve its operations.

Van Vuuren also revealed that although the airliner went through all the channels that could stimulate the Accra-Windhoek route, it proved costly for the company as they had to subsidise it with earnings from other routes.
