Air Namibia’s Licence Expires Today

AIR Namibia’s licence expires at close of business today.

The Namibian understands that although the national airliner has applied for a renewal, the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) in the Ministry of Works and Transport has not yet responded.

Should the DCA not renew the licence by close of business today, it means that Air Namibia’s operations could come to a halt.

It is not clear why the licence has not yet been renewed.

DCA director Angeline Simana-Paulo refused to comment yesterday, saying she does not discuss her clients in the media.

She, however, referred all questions to Air Namibia.

When reached for comment, Air Namibia Board chairperson Harald Schmidt said: “It’s a Sunday. I am not going to talk to you.”

He then hung up.

Those in the know said the Directorate of Civil Aviation has the right not to renew an airline’s licence if the company does not meet international safety and operational standards.

However, sources said the company still has today to sort out whatever compliance problems they might have, which could be the reason why the DCA has not already renewed its licence.
