Ambunda Now Super Bantamweight Fighter

Namibia’s former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Bantamweight World Champion, Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda has moved up a notch in his weight class and will for the first time in his career fight in the Super Bantamweight division when he takes on Cristian Palma from Chile on May 17 at the Omuthiya Park in Omuthiya.

In Ambunda’s previous weight division, which was the Bantamweight category, the weight limit is 53.40 kg, while in his new weight category, the Super Bantamweight division, the weight limit is 55.50kg. “Ambunda has unfortunately outgrown the Bantamweight division and this is quite normal for any boxer. Moving up in weight is indeed a new opportunity for him, but it will come with new challenges, new tough opponents as well as new opportunities,” said Promoter Nestor Tobias. “We were very fortunate to find the International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Association (WBA) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) International titles all vacant at the same time, as most of their former holders moved up to fight for world titles. We have therefore decided to unify all three titles on the night Ambunda fights Palma and a possible victory for Ambunda will mean he becomes the International Super Bantamweight champion of the WBO, WBA and IBF,” he explained.

“It will be history in the making, as Ambunda will be the first Namibian boxer to fight for three prestigious titles from three different world recognized organizations.” A win will see Ambunda’s world ranking improve dramatically in all three organizations, which makes him eligible for a world title fight in any of the three organizations. Ambunda holds an impressive record of 21 fights, 20 wins and only one loss, while his opponent Cristians boast 27 fights, 19 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw. Tickets are available at Computicket outlets and VIP tickets will sell for N$500, while standard tickets will go for only N$50.
