Another Baby Dumped

Another baby was dumped in the capital over the weekend, the Namibian Police has announced.

Sergeant Slogan Matheus told the media at the weekly crime briefing that a female passerby heard cries coming from a municipal dustbin at the corner of Monte Christo and Hereford roads at about 07h00 yesterday.

She notified the police, who arrived at the scene with an ambulance.

Upon closer inspection, the police found a healthy day-old baby girl in the dustbin wrapped in a towel.

The baby was taken to the Katutura State Hospital where she is receiving medical care and attention.

It is suspected that the mother gave birth during Saturday night and dumped the baby immediately into the dustbin.

The suspect (mother of the baby) is unknown at this stage and the police are appealing to anyone with information on the mother or even the father to come forth in order to trace the mother.

A case of attempted murder or alternatively concealment of birth was opened by the police.

A case of housebreaking and theft was opened at the Wanaheda Police Station after unknown suspects gained entry unlawfully into Woermann Brock Supermarket in Tugela Street.

It is alleged that the suspect(s) used a bolt cutter and cutting torch to cut through the roof of the shop on Friday morning at about 03h05.

Inside the building they cut open a Bank Windhoek ATM and removed an unknown amount of money before they broke into a small cellphone apartment where they stole an unknown amount of money and cellphones.

The security officer that was guarding the complex was not found at his duty station at the time of the incident and was picked up by the police for questioning.

Police investigations continue.

It was also reported that a 29-year-old female was raped by an unknown suspect yesterday morning at about 02h00 in a riverbed at Mathisthi Street in the Greenwell area.

It is alleged that the victim was returning home from a night out and took a taxi outside a certain bar in Greenwell and an unknown male patron followed her into the same cab.

When the complainant was dropped off at her residence, the suspect also disembarked and when the taxi drove away, the suspect grabbed the victim and pulled her into the riverbed where he had sexual intercourse without her consent.

Police investigations continue.

A case of culpable homicide was opened by the police after a pedestrian was killed by a silver Toyota Corolla taxi at about 07h05 on Friday.

According to the crime briefing, the taxi was driving along Sam Nujoma Drive in Otjomuise when two people suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

One of the people, an adult male person allegedly got confused and darted in and out of the road and was hit by the oncoming taxi.

He was taken to the Katutura State Hospital by ambulance where he was announced dead on arrival.

The deceased was identified as Ferdinand Nhifikwa and police investigations continue.
