Archers Get Ready for Independence Shoot

THE Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) will host its annual “Independence Shoot” this weekend on the archery range of SKW in Windhoek.

So far, a total of 18 archers have confirmed their participation at the prestigious event. As usual, the compound and recurve shooters will battle it out in ten different age categories.

The tournament will stretch over two and a half days. On the afternoon of Thursday, March 20th, all participants will be given the opportunity to test their bows and arrows at the official training day. The next day Friday, March 21st, will see the archers going head-to-head in the single FINA round. Here, each participant can gain a maximum of 1440 points over a single round that is sub-divided into four different distances.

The event comes to an end on Saturday, March 22nd, with the grand finale which consists of an Olympic round, the elimination round and the medal matches.

This will be one of the last opportunities for a number of Namibia archers to prepare for upcoming international events. First up, a 19 member delegation will head to Johannesburg to participate in the 64th South African National Archery Championships, which are scheduled to get underway from 29 March to 3 April.

Another special focus will be Francois Marais, Ruan van Staden, Louw Nel and Lesley Page. This quartet will travel to Antalya, Turkey to participate in the World Cup from 10 to 15 June.

Furthermore, the “Independence Shoot” presents a great opportunity for a number of archers to prepare themselves for the Federation of African Archery (FAA) Championship to be held in April in Windhoek – especially those who are still in the running to qualify for the Junior Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
