Armas Amukwiyu Marathon in Early June

The inaugural Armas Amukwiyu Marathon Challenge will be held on 6 June between Omuthiya and Onyaanya in the Oshikoto region.

Amukwiyu is the Swapo Party regional coordinator for that region.

Organiser of the event, Namibian long-distance athlete Gabriel Simon Shokonawa, told Nampa earlier this week that Amukwiyu is both the sponsor of the race and the new patron of the Shokonawa Marathon Academy.

He added that Swapo coordinator for the Oniipa district, Jerry Ngwena, is the new secretary of the Shokonawa Marathon Academy.

The two Swapo officials, Shokonawa said, were appointed during the Shokonawa Marathon Academy management meeting held in Windhoek a few weeks ago.

He said Amukwiyu is eager to transform the marathon into an international event and attract athletes from outside Namibia.

Shokonawa will also participate in the 42,4 kilometre marathon. Other distances to be run are 5km, 10km and a half marathon of 21,1km.

He noted that 13 Angolan athletes have confirmed their participation in this marathon, while about seven long-distance runners from South Africa have also shown interest.

The marathon has been sponsored with an amount of N$110 000.

Shokonawa said it is the first time the marathon received a sponsorship of more than N$100 000 the highest sponsorship received previously was N$72 000, also from Amukwiyu, last year.

“It is also the first time that the overall winners, male and female, will each take home N$5 000, unlike in the past when our top prize was just N$1 600,” he said.

The prize-giving event will be held at a business place of prominent Namibian lawyer, Sisa Namandje, in the Onyaanya settlement after the marathon.
