Ausiku appointed as first governor of Kavango West

WINDHOEK: The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Sirkka Ausiku has been appointed as the first Governor of the Kavango West Region.

Ausiku will take up the position as from next month.

Swapo-Party Secretary-General (SG) Nangolo Mbumba made the announcement at a media conference on the outcome of the Swapo-Party Central Committee (CC) meeting which ended in Windhoek on Saturday.

“The CC has welcomed the appointment of Comrade Ausiku as the governor of the newly created Kavango West Region. This appointment is another marked fulfilment of the Swapo-Party policy on gender equality,” he said.

The Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia, responsible for making recommendations on the country’s administrative divisions, suggested in August 2013 that the Kavango Region be split into two, bringing the number of political regions in the country to 14.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba enacted the recommendations and as a result, two new regions – Kavango East and Kavango West – were created.

Kavango West has been without a governor for almost a year, while former governor of the Kavango Region, Samuel Mbambo was appointed of the governor of Kavango East.

Ausiku served as PS of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare before taking up her current position.

The Swapo-Party SG also announced the establishment of a national preparatory committee to spearhead preparations for the 2014 elections.

The committee will be chaired by Swapo-Party President Hifikepunye Pohamba, with the party’s vice-president Hage Geingob as his deputy.

Mbumba and his deputy Laura McLeod-Katjirua will provide secretariat duties to the committee whilst all national Swapo-Party leaders from both the CC and Parliament will form part of the preparatory committee.

The Central Committee also approved the establishment of sub-committees under the preparatory committee, which will attend to specific critical issues.

In this regard, an administration and finance sub-committee was established, which will be chaired by Immanuel Ngatjizeko, while the publicity and voters education sub-committee will be chaired by Helmut Angula.

Other sub-committees created are strategy, planning and legal matters to be chaired by Nahas Angula; protocol and security to be headed by Erkki Nghimtina; and logistics and transport, which will be the responsibility of Jerry Ekandjo.

Meanwhile, Mbumba informed the media that the CC followed through on the decisions of its last Ordinary and Extra-Ordinary Congress regarding the amendment to the Swapo-Party Constitution and the effects thereof to the party structures, and thus appointed Marco Hausiku as the head of department of the newly created department of housing, sanitation and rural development.

Utoni Nujoma was appointed as head of department of the newly created department of agriculture, water and food security.
