Benson Shilongo out of Brave Warriors team against Zimbabwe

MORULENG: Namibian striker Benson Shilongo has been ruled out of the Brave Warriors team facing Zimbabwe at the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup due to a swollen ankle.

The senior national footballer injured his ankle while paying for Namibia against Mauritius on Tuesday night at the Moruleng Stadium.

Shilongo who joined the team on Sunday from his club Gaborone United in Botswana scored two goals for Namibia when they beat Mauritius 2-0 on Tuesday.

Speaking to Nampa ahead of the Brave Warriors game on Thursday Shilongo said his swollen ankle is making it difficult for him and he was then advised by the doctors after undergoing axe ray tests to rest.

“I don’t know for how long I will seat but if the swelling gets better I can then be able to move my ankle and run so I will be back in the team if we beat Zimbabwe today,” said Shilongo.

National team coach Ricardo Mannetti said he has only made one change to his starting line-up that beat Mauritius on Tuesday.

“We still need to attack today because getting the three points will be very crucial and losing Benson will be a blow to the team striking department but Peter Shalulile has be brought in today to come do the damage control,” said the coach.

Namibia will play Zimbabwe in their last game of the group stages on Thursday at 16h00 Namibian time (GMT +1).

Zimbabwe is currently top of the group with six points while Namibia is second in the group with four points after drawing its first and then winning on Tuesday.

For Namibia to go through to the next round of the competition, it has to beat Zimbabwe in their last game of Group A.
