Big Ben’s Latest Song Speaks Out Against Baby Dumping

NAMIBIAN songwriter and live music artist Big Ben has taken a bold stance in using music to spread the message against baby dumping.

The song, which is titled ‘Africa Unite’ (Against Baby Dumping), was written with the sole purpose of spreading the message against the social evil.

The figures for baby dumping keep rising, despite efforts to curb the crime. It is even more saddening that according to a January 2013 report by the Namibia Press Agency, about 40 babies and foetuses are dumped or flushed down toilets every month in Windhoek.

With this in mind Big Ben wrote his latest song. He admits that as an artist, he has the power to enforce messages to his fans and those who simply happen to find themselves listening to the song.

“This issue is immediate and current but nobody is talking about it. Although it appears in the papers on a daily basis. It’s as if people forget about it immediately,” says Big Ben. He hopes that the song reaches everyone and that it creates not only awareness, but starts conventions in communities.

“This song is for everyone who has ears. This is because we never know who is a perpetrator or who is a victim so we should all wake up and spot the dangers,” he says.

As is the case with most of his previous songs, the lyrics have been written in various languages. He sings in English, Oshiwambo and Otjiherero.

This, he says, is to reach more people with the message.

It’s a touching song, with lyrics that cut right through to the sickening reality of the crime.

“You promised them a future, you promised them a future … And suddenly she puts me in a plastic bag … Like a dead dog, I cannot breathe, it’s dark in here … Meme what’s going on,” Big Ben sings.

This is not the first time that Big Ben sings about social issues and aspirations for change. His song ‘One Thousand Tears’ spoke out on an equally disturbing issue of gender-based violence (GBV).

He is one of the few Namibian artists who sing about real problems faced by ordinary people.

‘Africa Unite’ will be included in a future album although Big Ben could not say which one.
