Black Africa Held to a Draw By Ramblers

BLACK Africa returned to the top of the NPL log after a 1-1 draw against Ramblers at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Wednesday night.

Ramblers took the lead against the run of play through Timoteus Hambanda with three minutes of normal time remaining but BA struck back barely a minute later through a goal by substitute striker Riaan Eugene to take a share of the spoils.

It was a great response by BA, who displayed their championship credentials, and are now one point clear of Tigers who have a game in hand.

But despite their fine comeback, with their surfeit of possession and scoring chances, the defending champions will rue not making better use of their chances.

In an uneventful first half, both teams initially made use of long, high balls, but to little effect.

Ramblers had the first real chance when Clemence Uwiteb spotted BA keeper Ephraim Tjihonge off his line, but his long range effort went wide, while at the other end, a shot by BA striker Roger Katjiteo was well blocked by Ramblers’ youthful goalie Ivan Hoeseb.

BA reverted to short passes as the half wore on but could not break through Ramblers’ defence which was well marshalled by Oliver Risser and Bruce Goseb, while Ramblers’ midfielder Lucky Kooper came close with a long range cracker that went narrowly wide of the upright.

BA came out attacking in the second half with Petrus Gideon, Leeroy Adams and captain Willy Stephanus all putting in some g runs.

With BA piling on the pressure, Stephanus had a cracking shot well saved by Hoeseb, while Denzil Haoseb blasted over the bar, but Ramblers’ defence stood firm, with Risser keeping a good check on Roger Katjiteo.

Ramblers defender Boma Nailonga cleared a loose ball after a rare fumble by Hoeseb, while at the other end, Ramblers captain Amy Savihemba had a cracking shot tipped for a corner.

With time running out, BA substitute striker Eugene Riaan came close when he had a shot saved by a diving Hoeseb, but it was Ramblers who took the lead against the run of play when Timoteus Hambanda headed in a cross by Immanuel Heita with there minutes to go.

Black Africa however displayed their mental strength when they immediately struck back with an equaliser a minute later.

Stephanus had a long range shot blocked by Hoeseb and Riaan followed up to slam the loose ball in the net.
