Blood Donors Are Heroes

COUNTRIES around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day on 14 June every year.

This year’s theme is ‘Thank you for saving my life’.

The Namibian Blood Transfusion Services (NAMBTS) celebrate this day with events to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products and most importantly celebrating blood donors.

NAMBTS spokesperson Zita Tobin said they would like to thank the blood donors for their life-saving gift of blood.

“Blood donors are our heroes who give up their time and selflessly donate their blood. World Blood Donor Day honours these heroes,” she said, adding that they encourage other donors to bring a family member, a friend or a colleague along to donate blood.

Tobin further said last year 28 800 donations were made and 86 400 lives were saved.

“This year the demand has increased and at least 30 000 blood donations are needed. This will save about 90 000 lives,” Tobin added.

The donated blood helps mothers at childbirth and premature babies apart from accident victims as well as cancer patients, those waiting for organ transplants.

One of the beneficiaries of donated blood, 20-year-old Paulus Hamuteka said he was stabbed during a robbery this year and was admitted to hospital.

“After I was stabbed, I was unconscious and woke up in the hospital the next day, but my hands were pale. I was still very dizzy. When I told the doctor, they immediately operated on me.

“They then told me that five litres of my blood was clotted inside my body. They had to remove it and as a result, I lost a lot of blood. I am grateful to blood donors. Someone’s blood saved my life. I was a donor myself but after my ordeal, I will be donating more,” Hamuteka said.

Brandan Butcher (30) who has been donating blood since he was 16 years old, encouraged others to donate blood.

“By donating you can save a life, even your own. I have donated 58 times and counting,” Butcher says.

Maria Buhm (59), a cancer patient, says she underwent a big operation where she needed four bags of blood and she also thanked her donors for saving her life.
