Boy Dies in Usakos Shack Fire

A four-year-old boy was burned to death in a shack fire in Usakos on Tuesday.

According to Erongo’s Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator, Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, the incident happened at 22h50 in the Saamstaan section of Usakos’ Hakhaseb location.

Presley Orub (4) was allegedly asleep in the shack when his mother left the dwelling. It is alleged that a lit candle she left in the shack either burnt down or fell over, resulting in the shack catching fire.

“It was completely destroyed and the boy was burned beyond recognition,” Iikuyu told The Namibian. An inquest was opened and the matter is being investigated, Iikuyu said.

In another incident, a 28-year old homeless man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the alleged murder of another 19-year-old homeless man identified as Fabian Bauwers.

Bauwers’ body was discovered at Meersig on Tuesday morning.

It is alleged that he confronted the suspect about an incident in which the suspect had allegedly stolen his belongings.

This led to a fight between the two, in which the suspect allegedly stabbed Bauwers in the chest before fleeing.

Bauwers died on the spot. His next of kin have been informed. The suspect is expected to appear in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court today.

The police at Walvis Bay had a major breakthrough on Tuesday when they recovered goods valued at more than N$87 000 stolen from Ellerines furniture shop in the coastal town on Monday.

According to Iikuyu, the suspects allegedly broke through the roof of the shop with a cutting torch. Using a truck to transport the items, they stole 10 flatscreen televisions, 15 hi-fi systems, seven laptops and cellphones.

The truck was impounded and the six suspects were arrested.

They are expected to appear in court today.
