Businessman Hango Gets Bail

BUSINESSMAN Sindano Hango (36), who was arrested for allegedly raping a cousin and offering her money to buy her silence, was granted N$6 000 bail at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Hango allegedly raped his cousin on 10 October at Uuvudhiya village in the Oshana region and offered her anything between N$5 000 and N$10 000 through a police officer who was investigating the rape case.

The victim, however, rejected the money, arguing that Hango had violated her rights and taken away her dignity and must therefore face justice. She also accused the police of dragging their feet on the case, saying they were initially not looking for Hango seriously.

The victim further accused Hango’s parents of begging her to withdraw the case and that they had also offered her money.

Cross-examined during his bail hearing last week which continued this week, Hango denied raping the victim, saying they had agreed to have sexual intercourse.

He, in fact, said the victim initiated the act and that they first engaged in sexual activities in 2012. He also said every time they had sex, she would tell him about her problems that needed money.

On the day of the alleged rape, Hango said the complainant had asked him for N$420 because she wanted to travel to Keetmanshoop in the south.

He denied attempting to buy the victim’s silence, saying that he never offered her money after the encounter.
