Capablanca Retains Chess League Title in Style

Capablanca Chess Club successfully defended their Namsports Premier Chess League crown, going undefeated throughout the season.

Gunter Husselman Chess Club who led the standings briefly, finished second with the Indomitable Knight ending third. TWCA and Poly U-Knighted also received cash prizes for finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

“We are glad to make history as we are still undefeated since last year,” said Thomas Ehrich, team captain of Capablanca Chess Club.

“That’s now 44 games and I believe this record will stand for a long time. I wish to urge other clubs to pull up their socks and give us a run for our money.”

The other members of Capablanca are Charles Eichab, Otto Nakapunda, Richard Naytoti, Peter Gallert and Sanders Oberholzer.

The bottom three clubs of Unam Titans, Poly Rookers and Checkmante have been relegated. They will be part of the Division 1 Chess League which is to be formed next year.

“I’d like to call on new clubs to register their interest and be part of this new Division 1 as we need to increase the number of clubs and players,” remarked Nakapunda, the League Administrator.

“Also, I’d like to thank Telecom Namibia through their tn mobile brand for their generous sponsorship which made this dream come true for many chess enthusiasts.”

tn mobile sponsored N$30 000 for the 26-round league which was played on Monday nights at Hotel Thuringerhof.
