Citizens Make History By Reaching Cup Final

Citizens made history on Saturday when they beat United Stars 2-0 to become the first non-Premier League team to reach the Biest Namibia Cup final.

They will meet African Stars in the final after ‘Stalile’ beat Tura Magic by the same score in the second semifinal.

Citizens’ giant killing act continued with second half goals by Henry Somseb and Jan Vleermuis to give the newly-promoted team a place in the final.

In a match of few chances, Tomas Muketiwa came the closest for United Stars when his shot was cleared off the line by Citizens’ defence after goalie Immanuel Immanuel missed a cross.

Immanuel atoned for that mistake with some great saves in the second half, which won him the man of the match award, while Citizens came out of their shell and started attacking more.

Somseb opened the scoring on 61m after a fine run by Ronald Charz, while Somseb turned provider for Jan Vleermuis who tapped into an empty net on 85m after Stars’ keeper Bartleth Thikerete had rushed off his line.

The second semifinal was much more exciting with the both teams going full-out at each other and creating numerous chances.

Ninja Karongee put Stars ahead on 19m but Tura Magic gave a fighting display till the end, before substitute Riaan Cloete scored in injury time to make it 2-0 for Stars.

After some early chances went astray, Stars took the lead on 19m when Heinrich Kazerua put in a g run and passed to an unmarked Ninja Karongee who tapped the ball into an empty net.

Tura Magic hit back with some quick counterattacks, with Robinson Iyambo and Junias Theophelus impressive, while their Ghanaian midfielder Alhasan Kalusha gave a fighting display in midfield that earned him the man of the match award.

Stars winger Edwin Korukuve was in fine form, as he regularly broke down the wing and sent in numerous crosses which were not finished off.

In a hectic second half with constant attacks, Theophelus and Robinson came close to scoring for Magic, while Korukuve and Karongee came close for Stars.

In the final minutes Iyambo hit the bar with a freekick but it was Stars who wrapped up the victory when Riaan Cloete latched onto a long clearance to score unopposed.
