Coastal town mayors lose race for Swapo Pot

SWAKOPMUND; The Swapo-Party Erongo regional executive committee elected Derek Klazen and Priscilla Kavita to represent the region at the party’s Electoral College expected next month.

This is in line with the party’s 50/50 gender representation policy for leadership positions.

Klazen is a former mayor of Walvis Bay and now treasurer for the Walvis Bay Urban District, while Kavita is the coordinator for the Swapo-Party Women’s Council (SPWC) in Erongo.

Swakopmund mayor Juuso Kambueshe and Walvis Bay Mayor Uilika Nambahu lost the race to represent the region at the Electoral College.

Others who also did not make the list are Johannes Ngolombe, who is the regional coordinator for the Namibia Public Workers’ Union (Napwu) here, and Inecia Brandt, the party’s district coordinator for the Daures Constituency.

Six members were identified by the region and then scrutinised by the Swapo Politburo, before the regional leadership elected only two representatives.

Briefing Nampa on Sunday, Swapo’s regional coordinator, Phillipus Heita said for a member to qualify for the Electoral College, he/she must be a paid-up member, and must be active, honest and loyal to the party.

Another requirement is that a member must be in the party for no less than 10 years, and should have no criminal record.
