Coca-Cola, Marathon Sugar Support Schools’ Athletics

The National Schools’ Athletics Championships set to take place here next month received a welcome financial boost from Coca-Cola and Marathon Sugar on Thursday.

The championships will take place on 11 and 12 April at the Independence Stadium in the capital, and will comprise various track and field athletics’ disciplines.

Coca-Cola donated N$171 000, while Marathon Sugar gave N$45 000.

Speaking during the handing-over ceremony, the Namibia Schools’ Sports Union (NSSU)’s National Coordinator Solly Duiker said sport was a collective undertaking.

“Sport is not about an individual or an institution, but about coming together and doing one thing for Namibia at large,” he noted.

Duiker thanked the sponsors for always coming on board, and sponsoring the annual national schools’ athletics championships.

More than 800 athletes from all 14 of Namibia’s regions will participate in this year’s championships, compared to 620 last year.

Only the Kunene Region has not had its regional sports championships yet to select its top 16 athletes to send to the national championships due to rain showers there.

However, the region will have its sports day this coming weekend, if the rain permits.

On his part, the Managing Director of Namibia Beverages, Frik Oosthuizen said they believe in the youth as future leaders and the basis of everything, going forward.

Oosthuizen said sport does not discriminate, or look at where an athlete comes from.

“Sport does not look at whether you have money or not, or where you come from. If you are good, then you are just good,” he stated. – Nampa
