Councillor Kombwana Loses Battle With Cancer

THE Ohangwena Constituency councillor, Maria Kombwana, died after a long battle with breast cancer on Monday this week at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.

Ohangwena governor Usko Nghaamwa told The Namibian that Kombwana’s death is a huge loss to her family, the Ohangwena regional council and the Swapo Party, since she was appreciated everywhere and worked tirelessly.

He added that Kombwana had been battling with the illness since she was elected as councillor. Nghaamwa said she announced her illness to the council in 2012.

Kombwana, a teacher by profession, is said to have never publicly shown any sign of the illness when she was elected as councillor, even though she had been in and out of the hospital on several occasions.

Nghaamwa said Kombwana died while she was on duty.

She is survived by her daughter and several grandchildren. Her burial is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Etale village, Ohangwena Region.
