Court Dismisses Bail Reduction

Alleged robber Jonas Awala failed in his quest to get his bail reduced in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court last week. Awala is accused of robbing the complainant at knifepoint of his belongings comprising one HP laptop, charger and bag valued at N$10 000, one calculator (N$400), one Microsoft mouse (N$200), one mobile phone (N$600), one ring (N$1 000) one watch (N$45), cash (N$300), one 3G Dongle (N$300) and a brown wallet (N$500). He was granted bail of N$6 000 after his first appearance in December 2012, but was until now unable to post bail.

At his most recent court appearance last week he asked Magistrate Justine Asino to reduce his bail to N$2 500, since he was unable to raise the amount. Prosecutor Samantha Diergaardt was however quick to object to the reduction, saying there was a g case against Awala, who was arrested after about an hour following the robbery.

She said he faced a serious offence and the amount of N$2 500 suggested by Awala would not serve as an inducement for him to be in court.

Asino agreed with Diergaardt’s sentiments and refused Awala’s request before remanding the case to May 06 for his legal aid application.
