Defence Denies Chinese Base Development

THE Ministry of Defence has denied confirming plans that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy are planning to build a naval base at Walvis Bay in the next 10 years.

In an article, which The Namibian published yesterday, defence spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Monica Sheya was quoted as saying: “We have read about it, and I believe it is being discussed on the higher levels, but that’s all I can say now. Once a decision has been made, we will be sure to inform the nation about it, but we cannot say more yet.”

Yesterday, Sheya said the article suggested that she confirmed the news that Namibia was in fact aware of such plans, and that it was being discussed on the higher levels. This was apparently a misinterpretation.

According to Sheya, she never confirmed any such reports, stating that “if there had been any such plans, we do not know of it on the operational level. Maybe it is being discussed on higher levels. It is still solely a Chinese matter, and once we are officially informed, we’ll be in a position to tell the nation.”
