Deployment of Oshana election polling officials on track

OSHAKATI: The deployment of all election materials and polling officials to their respective polling stations is well on track, Oshana Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Regional Coordinator Julius Shongolo says.

Shongolo told Nampa here on Thursday that the deployment started at about 06h00 and was expected to conclude by 17h00.

“We are waiting for some materials to arrive from Windhoek. Another truck with more election materials was due to arrive soon,” he said.

The electronic voting machines (EVMs) and other sensitive election materials were kept at the Oshakati Police Station, and were dispatched from there accompanied by police officers.

Shongolo said the verification of the election materials has been done in the presence of police officers and polling officials. He said no political party agents turned up for the verification process.

The region has over 1 054 polling officials to man 174 polling stations of which 139 are fixed polling stations and 35 mobile teams in 11 constituencies.

He said some of the polling stations will have an allocation of six polling officials, while others will have eight officials due to the number of eligible voters surrounding the polling stations.

Oshana Region has 104 218 eligible voters, of which 60 394 are women and 43 824 are men.

A total of 1 241 194 voters countrywide have registered for the upcoming elections.
