Donations Pour in for Child-Headed Home

More donations poured in on Tuesday for the 17-year-old girl and her two young siblings who since last year have been living on their own after their mother unceremoniously deserted them without food.

Maria Matheus was left with the daunting task of caring for her nine-year-old sister and her five-year-old brother when their mother left last September without saying where she was going.

Since New Era broke their story early last month, they have received assistance from several Good Samaritans with more benefactors coming to the rescue of the unfortunate children. On Tuesday, two men – who refused to be named – said they were truly moved and touched by the three children’s story. One of them mobilised their colleagues to make contributions and they gave the children two bags of maize meal, cooking oil, a bag of beef and fish as well as soup, among others.

“It was really a touching story because at the age of 17, she (Maria) has to be a parent to her siblings and herself,” said one of the men.

He said even if the donation “is not going to be sustainable it would help them for the days to come. We really thank New Era for breaking the story because we are here making a small contribution. We know there might be a lot of them out there but we if we don’t know we won’t be able to help.”
