ECN officials do not have official IDs

WINDHOEK; Election officials will not have any official identification cards, and will only wear Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) branded T-shirts and caps on election day.

Over 13 000 election officials have been appointed to perform duties at various levels of the electoral operations.

These officials will be working at a total of 1 386 fixed and 2 586 mobile polling stations across the country for the 2014 Presidential and National elections countrywide on Friday.

ECN Director of Operations, Theo Mujoro confirmed this to Nampa on Wednesday, saying no provision for official documentation or identification cards had been made by his office for officials to identify themselves to registered voters.

“Looking at the time in which the election officials were appointed and the time they were sent into the field, there was no time to produce identification cards for them,” he explained.

The absence of official documentation or identification could lead to any unauthorized person gaining entry into houses and/or farms in remote areas on the pretext of being ECN officials.

A total of 1 255 fixed teams and 825 mobile teams will be deployed across the 121 constituencies nationally.
