ECN registers nearly 1 000 during Ohangwena registration

ONGWEDIVA: The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) registered 958 potential voters during the supplementary voters’ registration for the Ohangwena Constituency by-election in the Ohangwena Region.

The ECN supervisor of the said registration, Lysias Haiduwa told Nampa in an interview on Monday the registration process went well.

He pointed out that no significant difficulties were experienced by the 17 teams of ECN officials who manned 33 registration points throughout the Ohangwena Constituency.

The supplementary voters’ registration for the Ohangwena Constituency by-election took place from 09 to 13 June.

Haiduwa said political parties and independent candidates are scheduled to submit the names of their candidates for the Ohangwena Constituency by-election to the ECN as from Monday to 05 July.

“We held a meeting with the political parties today to inform them about the period of the submission of candidates,” Haiduwa stated.

The official announcement of the candidates who will participate in the by-election will be made between 09h00 and 11h00 on05 July.

“The announcement of the candidates will take place at the Ohangwena Constituency Office at the Onhuno settlement,” he said.

An estimated total of 12 000 voters will go to the polls during the Ohangwena Constituency by-election, following the death of the constituency’s councillor Maria Tuleingepo Kombwana who died from cancer in an Ongwediva private hospital early last month.

The late Kombwana served the Ohangwena Constituency on the ticket of the ruling Swapo-Party.

The ECN has provisionally set 05 August as the date for the by-election.

Members of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) have already elected the party’s Ohangwena District’ mobiliser, Vilho Shomwooshili, as their candidate for the by-election.
