ECN sets up 3 966 polling stations for elections

WINDHOEK; The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has set up a total of 3 966 polling stations across the country for the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The elections are scheduled for 28 November.

The Chairperson of the ECN Notemba Tjipueja announced at a media briefing on Thursday that the ECN will operate 1 255 fixed and 2 711 mobile polling stations across the country for the upcoming general elections.

The ECN will deploy 1 255 fixed teams and 825 mobile teams across the 121 constituencies nationally.

Tjipueja said the ECN has appointed 42 Regional Coordinators and Assistant Coordinators as well as 121 Returning Officers.

The chairperson explained that the ECN will deploy approximately 140 Information Technology (IT) support technicians across the country to provide much-needed technical support in the field.

She added that close to 13 000 ECN officials will be deployed to perform duty at various levels of the electoral operations.

Tjipueja said the ECN in collaboration with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and other partners are currently establishing a Central Elections Results Centre (CERC) in Windhoek at the ECN headquarters.

She said the CERC is needed to facilitate regular reporting to the public through the media, hosting of press conferences, and the release of factual information.

The chairperson explained that the CERC allows for a co-ordinated response on flashpoints and hotspots countrywide through the utilisation of the elaborate network of election managers deployed across the country.

The CERC will also be a platform were Commissioners and the Political Party Liaison Committee engage on a regular basis to reflect on difficulties encountered and to identify areas requiring additional support and action.

In her update, Tjipueja similarly said that most importantly, the CERC will serve as the venue for the final collating, auditing and announcement and publishing of the election result.

The results will be announced within 24 hours after the election process.

All the polling stations will open at 07h00 and close at 21h00.
