WINDHOEK: Acting Chief Veterinary Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry John Shoopala said there are several available markets for Namibian meat and meat products across the globe.

Shoopala said countries such as Finland, Canada, United State of America, China, Hong Kong, among others, have shown interest in the country’s meat and meat products.

He was speaking on Thursday during the Agricultural Trade Forum Public Dialogue on the future of the Namibian livestock industry in light of the new veterinary requirements by South Africa.

Late last year, South Africa imposed stringent veterinary import conditions for Namibian livestock, especially those intended for direct slaughter and feedlots.

Currently all animals have to be tested as per new permit as implemented from 1 May 2014.

The new animal requirements for the import of livestock introduced by South Africa will have socio-economic consequences, particularly for small livestock and communal farmers who depend on livestock exports for sustenance.

“We just have to develop our abattoirs and feedlot system in order to produce our meat and meat products to available markets,” he said.

South Africa has been a traditional market for Namibian livestock and meat products.

“We have to set up formal market and abattoirs for our goats. We have to formalise the goat meat production and Developing weaner meat market segment,” he advised.

Investment in fodder production, such as green scheme dedicated for fodder production, is an important segment in the development of feed-lot system.

“These are some of the possible strategies for a sustainable livestock sector that would reduce reliance on live exports,” he said.

In addition, Shoopala said, these strategies will create value addition to the country’s livestock, create employment to the country’s youth and making Namibia a self-reliant country.

He reiterated that there are available markets for the country’s meat and meat products.

On 10 June this year, South African Livestock stakeholders hold a meeting and several resolutions were made regarding the SOP.

It was decided that the import requirement will be streamlined to facilitate trade whilst safeguarding SA animal health status.

They also agreed in principle that livestock destine for abattoirs and feedlot may be handled differently from those meant for breeding purpose.

This is likely to take place as from 1 July this year.

“These conditions are very stringent and make it very difficult for Namibia to export live cattle, sheep and goats to that country,” he said, adding that most animals exported to that country are non-breeding.

However, he explained,South Africa indicated that non breeding animals’ permit will be only operationalised if Standard of Operation Procedures (SOP) is in place.

SOP not yet in place and still no draft SOP for goats.

He describe the cost of compliance which include individually testing and treatment and cost of pre- export isolation as cumbersome.
