Ex-Oshakati Mayor Atshipara Dies

Atshipara died of heart failure on Sunday at the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek. He was 77.

His death was confirmed by Oshakati acting chief executive officer Orestus Shilunga, who described Atshipara as the longest serving mayor at the Oshakati Town Council.

A teacher by profession, Atshipara became an Oshakati town councillor in 1996 after the death of then councillor Hidinwa Hamupunda. He became the chairperson of the management committee that year and was elected the third mayor from 1997 until 2007.

He was also the chairperson of Oshakati Premier Electric (OPE), an electrical company owned by the town council from its establishment in 2000. Although he retired from the council in 2010, Atshipara remained the chairperson of OPE and a farmer until his death.

Atshipara trained as a teacher at DOumlbra near Windhoek in the early 1960s. He was once a headmaster, a circuit inspector and later director of education for Oshana region. He was also a political activist in Oshana region and served as a branch coordinator for Okatana and Oshakati.

Atshipara is survived by his wife Faustina Atshipara, children and grandchildren.

Shilunga said funeral arrangements are underway, and will be announced in due course.
