Exciting Matches At NTA Junior Tennis Tournament

THE fifth NTA junior tennis tournament was held in Windhoek last weekend with tournament organizer Clive Gawanab of the NTA tennis junior committee arranging the matches at courts located in Academia, the Police tennis club, Eros tennis club, Windhoek High school and the Central Tennis Club.

The more than 50 junior players came from Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Outjo. Single and double matches for NTA ranking points were played in the age groups U10 to U16 boys and girls and the U18 girls group. No boys in the U18 age group registered for the tournament.

In the U10 boys competition Daniel van der Walt beat Melusi Khupe 8-5 in the final, while Jaco Bekker came third. In the U10 Boys doubles contest Daniel van der Walt and Peter Laubscher prevailed 8-6 over Albertos Brinkmann and Carlos Uriab.

The U10 girls competition was played out in round-robin format, with Anne Steenkamp emerging as the winner, followed by Elze Stears and Hendriana Appolus. No doubles were played in the girls U10 age group.

The U12 boy’s competition was played at the Academia sports field and provided many exciting matches. Swakopmund U12 tournament winner Maans Steenkamp from Outjo won the final against Unotiari Katunohange 6-2, 6-2, with Deacon Dejon finishing third. Oliver Riethmueller won the back draw against Rahul Singh 8-3.

In the U12 Boys doubles competition Maans Steenkamp and Conrad Theron were too g for Deacon Dejon and Lorenzo Danster, beating them 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

The U12 girl’s competition was won by Yone Minders, who beat Liza Yssel, while there were no doubles matches in this age group.

In the Boys U14 singles, Risto Shikongo of the FNB Junior Tennis Development Programme who already drew a lot of attention with his much improved game at the previous Swakopmund tournament again demonstrated that he is a junior player to watch.

In a thrilling final against the older and more experienced Tevin Tait he took the first set 6-4, but then ran out of steam, losing the second and third sets 6-3 and 6-0. Oliver Diggle won the third place against Development Programme player Giovanni Khakisi.

The U14 Boys double winners were Oliver Diggle and Oliver Hoffmann who beat Lian Minders and Gerhard Barnard 6-4, 6-4.

Another promising junior is the U12 girls player Taimi Nashiku. In this tournament she played one age group up and met Kiana Cormack in the final. Taimi showed her much improved game by winning 6-3 6-3 over her friend Kiana. Taimi then teamed up with Yone Minders to also win the U14 girls doubles final against Kiana Cormack and Carien van Rooyen.

In the U16 boys group Ruvan van Staden beat Paul Schwieger of Swakopund 6-3, 6-4 with Dantago Gawanab coming third. Paul Schwieger and Elias Shikongo defeated Clemens Roeber and Dantago Gawanab in a highly entertaining doubles match 6-3, 6-4 which earned both teams a lot of applause from the many spectators who had come to enjoy some high quality junior tennis at the CTC Olympia tennis courts.

The U16 girls competition was won by Jessica Riedel who beat Nina Becker in the final, while Riedel and Becker then teamed up to beat Nastasha Grant and Anika Henning in the doubles final.

In the U18 girls group Melissa Khupe prevailed over Suzan Strauss 6-1, 6-3. No doubles matches were played in this age group.

NTA president Bob Mould assisted by Clive Gawanab handed over the medals to the winners in all age groups. He thanked all the volunteers who helped make the tournament a big success.
