Free Secondary Education in 2016 – Pohamba

THE government has announced that as from 2016, all State secondary schools in the country will offer free education.

This announcement was made by President Hifikepunye Pohamba yesterday when officiating at the inauguration of Keetmanshoop Old Mutual Retail Centre which was built at the cost of N$92 million.

Pohamba said, two days ago, Cabinet had directed the Minister of Education David Namwandi to start preparations over the next two years for the realisation of free universal education come 2016.

“Parents and guardians will no longer be asked to pay for their children’s education. This will ease the heavy (financial) burden on parents, so that they will have no excuse for not sending their children to school,” said Pohamba, urging parents to send their children to school.

Pohamba stressed that only through education can the nation develop.

Namibia introduced free universal primary education this year.

The President also said the idea to introduce free universal primary education was mooted by Swapo Party leadership before it was followed up by the government.
