Freyer Wins Otjiwa MB Challenge

Martin Freyer of Team Kia won the Otjiwa Mountainbike Challenge after beating team mate Michael Pretorius and Herbert Peters in a sprint to the line.

After a gruelling 80km, nothing separated the three who crossed the line in a photo finish. Freyer just managed to finish in front in a time of 2 hours 31 minutes 51 seconds, with Pretorius coming second in the same time and Peters third, a second behind.

Ingram Cuff had to settle for fourth place, finishing more than four minutes behind in seven seconds behind in 2:36:38, while Gielie van Wyk came fifth in 2:40:32.

The Otjiwa Mountainbike Challenge was hosted at the Otjiwa Lodge close to Otjiwarongo and was sponsored by Kia.

In the Open women’s division, there was once again no stopping Irene Steyn who won the 80km race in a time of 2:46:24.

Daleen Steyn finished well behind in second place in 3:23:21 while Michelle Ham came third in 3:24:55.

Meanwhile, Pierre Knoetze put up a great performance to win the Veteran men’s division with an outstanding time of 2:31:56, more than 10 minutes faster than Rehuel Borstlap who finished second in 2:42:27.

In the Veteran women’s category, Michelle Vorster finished first in 2:54:03, with Anneke Steenkamp second in 3:07:37 and Andra van Staden third in 3:09:07.

Nick du Plessis won the Master men’s category in 2:35:31, followed by Russel Paschke (2:43:50) and Frank Snyman (2:45:08), while Barbara Ackermann won the Master women’s category in 3:14:43, followed by Caroline Janik (3:23:31) and Ester Smith (3:43:17).

Anthonie van Wyk won the Master men’s category over 40km in 1:22:55, followed by Abrie van Wyk (1:22:56) and Wynand Gouws (1:27:00), while Ilani Avis won the Master women’s 40km category in 1:31:51, followed by Michelle Fourie (1:37:50) and Ulande Viljoen (1:37:50).

Charl du Plooy won the Juvenile boys category over 40km in 1:26:02, followed by FC Smith (1:29:26) and Marcel Holtz (1:29:30), while Anke Janik won the Juvenile girls category over 40km in 1:50:23, followed by Natascha Kuehl in 2:21:28.
