Geingob to Make Major Announcements Next Month

PRESIDENT-elect and Prime Minister Hage Geingob has sent the country into speculative mode after he said he will make a major announcement in two weeks.

Geigob’s office issued a media statement late Monday afternoon, listing how many heads of state in the world congratulated him and pledged to work with Namibia.

At the end of the statement, it is recorded that as part of Geingob’s plans for setting up his government, “he intends to make a major announcement on 2 February 2015.” The statement further reads that the Prime Minister is also preparing to hold three press conferences at which he will shed light on the envisaged Presidential Council, and the positions of Vice President, Prime Minister and deputy Prime Minister.

The Namibian’s attempts to seek clarity, especially on what will constitute the Presidential Council, proved futile as both State House and the Office of the Prime Minister were not forthcoming with any answers. Speculation was also rife about whether the statement meant that President-elect Geingob will be sworn in earlier than 21 March and whether he will announce his cabinet sooner as well. A senior official from the Office of the Prime Minister however said that Geingob will be sworn in on 21 March as customary in the country.

According to Geingob’s statement, his election has been abuzz with the international news media covering the event on all major news networks. He said heads of state from SADC and other parts of the world congratulated him and are ready to work with Namibia.
