Gibeon smelly sewage haunts residents

The unbearable smell from Gibeon’s sewerage system still continue to haunt residents of this sleepy southern town.

Foul smelling sewerage that flows in residential erven and streets at the town has become the order of the day, much to the dismay of residents here.

Sewerage drains at most houses here are blocked, which caused the foul smelling water to fill up in these yards.

Residents have expressed their concern over the unpleasant situation they are living in, with children playing around the sewage water while animals like donkeys drink such water.

The residents told Napa that the issue started in 2011, shortly after the Gibeon Village Council installed the N.dollars 20 million vacuum sewerage system. The sewerage system was initially intended as a pilot project through the line ministry.

One of the residents, an elderly Anna Lukor, said she tried everything she could to resolve the issue but all her efforts were in vain.

She said that she called the regional office in a bid to settle the matter, but was apparently told that it was not their job to fix such job and that she must do it herself.

“I even tried to call the village councillor but he did not pick up and he did not even try to come and see the situation that we are talking about because we know the news reached his office,” said Lukor.

She said the untreated sewage water in such areas can contaminate the environment and cause diseases such as cholera.

“We don’t even sleep well anymore due to that smell, sometimes you are preparing food and is not safe at all,” she said.

The village Councillor ,Jeremias Gregory Van Neel, said he is aware of the situation and he will attend to it as soon as possible.

“I am aware of the Gibeon problem. We will try to solve the situation once and for all. This year everything will be addressed, people must just wait while we are attending to the problem,” he said.

Although an upgrade of the vacuum system to a gravity system was promised by the village council in 2011, no such upgrade has taken place.
