Gladiators to Tour Germany

THE Brave Gladiators will travel to Germany on 18 May for a series of friendly matches as they continue preparations for the upcoming Caf African Women’s Championship which will be held in Namibia in October this year.

After their 2-0 win over the touring German Westphalia Under-18 team at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Wednesday, the Gladiators were released from camp and are only expected back on 10 May.

The women’s national team defeated Westphalia through goals by Memory Ngonda, who headed home from a Zenatha Coleman free kick in the eleventh minute and Thomalina Adams, who rounded off the hapless goalkeeper to finish with aplomb on 62 minutes.

The Gladiators won the three-match series 2-1, having beaten Westphalia in Windhoek on Easter Friday 1-0 through a Coleman strike before going down 2-1 two days later in a match played at Swakopmund.

“We are very grateful to Westphalia for the three matches. The technical team is very happy with the level of competitiveness offered and how the games went and it is an experience that we hope the girls will cherish and build on going forward,” said Jackey Gertze of the NFA Women’s Desk.

“Despite being U18, Westphalia provided g opposition, but most of our players are young too. The players are out of camp now and will regroup ahead of the trip to Westphalia for two weeks where they will play more friendlies against top German women’s football teams,” Gertze said.

The Gladiators were scheduled to play a friendly match against South Africa on Saturday, 26 April, but following the latter’s withdrawal, it was a little too late for the NFA to secure another African opponent, she said.

“It is a very big year for African women’s football and the countries are getting more cautious as the date draws closer. We respect that and hopefully when we come from Germany we can secure more continental friendlies just to measure our readiness and see where we can improve and what we can expect during the championships in October,” said Gertze.
