Hango’s Bail Application Postponed

THE bail hearing for Sindano Hango, who was arrested for allegedly raping his cousin and offering her money to buy her silence, did not take place in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court last Thursday because there was no magistrate.

Hango (32), a well-known businessman involved in the construction industry and son of a councillor, allegedly raped his cousin on 10 October at Uuvudhiya village in Oshana region.

He then allegedly tried to bribe the victim with between N$5 000 and N$10 000, using an allegedly corrupt police officer investigating the rape case.

The victim, however, rejected the money, arguing that Hango had violated her rights and taken away her dignity.

Earlier this month, the victim told The Namibian that even the second officer assigned to the case had tried to convince her to accept the money and drop the case.

She accused the police of dragging their feet in arresting Hango and that they were not looking for him seriously.

The victim also claimed that Hango’s parents begged her to withdraw the case against their son and they offered her money too.

Hango was arrested last Tuesday and made a brief court appearance on Wednesday before Magistrate Mikka Namweya.

Petrina Hango prosecuted.

Hango was remanded in police custody and his case was postponed to Thursday for a formal bail application hearing.
