High School Student Drowns At Coast

A 16-year-old boy drowned on Tuesday afternoon in Swakopmund.

The victim was a pupil at Coastal High School and was staying at the Namib High Hostel in Swakopmund. He allegedly sneaked out of the hostel with fellow learners to go to the beach to swim.

The crime investigations coordinator for the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa confirmed the incident yesterday and said a search was underway for the deceased.

The search was being carried out by the Swakopmund Sea Rescue Unit.

Kashuupulwa explained that the deceased and five other schoolboys went to Mole Beach at around 15h30.

According to her the boys were playing along the shore when a g current swept them deep into the water. The others managed to swim out of the water but the deceased could not.

Kashuupulwa said the victim’s next of kin have already been informed about the tragedy, however his name will only be released once his body is recovered.
