Intamba Declared National Hero

President Hifikepunye Pohamba has declared the late Namibian Ambassador to Egypt, Andrew (Bongi) Intamba, a national hero.

Minister of Presidential Affairs Albert Kawana said in a statement that Intamba will be buried at the Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek on Thursday.

He also said all flags in the country will be flown at half mast from today until Thursday and that a memorial service will be held in his honour at the Parliament Gardens tomorrow.

Intamba died aged 67 in a Windhoek hospital last week. He joined the country’s liberation struggle in the 1960s, and spent most of his life in the security structures of the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan).

After independence in 1990, he became the country’s first intelligence chief until 2007.

President Pohamba appointed him Namibia’s Ambassador to Egypt in 2008 – a post he held till his death.

He is survived by his wife Johanna and five children.
