Job Shadow for Insurance Career

A group of nine learners from A. Shipena Secondary School in Katutura recently visited long-term insurer Sanlam as part of a Job Shadow programme to introduce them to the possibilities of a career in life insurance and investment. The A Shipena learners participated in the Junior Achievement (JA) Namibia’s Mini Company Programme that facilitates educational opportunities for high school learners to provide them with a wider range of choices in terms of careers. The learners visited Sanlam Investment Management, Namlife, Sanlam Client Services and the marketing division where they got insight into how insurance companies operate on the basis of accountability, trustworthiness and commitment to quality service delivery.

At Sanlam Investment Management, the learners gained valuable experience on how investment decisions are made based on thorough quantitative and qualitative analysis of businesses. Such knowledge will be critical in how they will run their JA Mini Company at their school. From the marketing division, the learners saw how to run marketing campaigns and the importance of building a brand that speaks for itself by consistently delivering quality services and products. At the Client Services division, values such as patience, understanding, flexibility and kindness were exalted as critical to effectively deal with a highly diverse customer base. Besides the details of how a large insurance company works, the learners were given aice on making career choices. “I learned that sometimes we need to make career changes for our own happiness, and that it is important to work really hard to one day do what we love,” observed one of the group of learners.
