Karatekas Leave for Zonal Championships

The Namibian Karate Union yesterday dispatched a large contingent of 73 karatekas from various age groups to Johannesburg, South Africa.

The team will participate in the 14th edition of the annual African Union Sports Council Region 5 Karate Championships, formerly known as the Zone Six Karate Tournament.

Karatekas from as far as Luumlderitz, Omaruru, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshana, Ohangwena, Oranjemund, Katima Mulilo and Windhoek will represent Namibia in various age categories.

The four-day event gets underway tomorrow at Turffontein, Johannesburg, with the finals slated for Saturday.

Sensei Freddy Mwila leads the large travelling entourage as coach and head of delegation and will be assisted by old hands Leonard Martin and De Wet Moolman.

Naku will be using the competition as qualification for the forthcoming All Africa Games in Congo, Brazaville, for the senior karatekas. The gathering will also serve as a qualification barometer for junior karatekas ahead of the World Karate Federation Championship in Indonesia later in November this year. The union held trials at Walvis Bay in March this year where successful candidates to represent their native land at the Africa Region 5 Tourney were carefully identified. In the meantime, Naku has applauded the portfolio ministry for its generous support by providing transport for the entire travelling entourage to South Africa.

Said Freddy Mwila: “We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation towards Ongwediva-based Penny Pinchers company for its unrivalled support, because its generosity, this tour would not have materialised.”

Mwila also urged other businesses to follow suit and expressed satisfaction with the rapid growth of karate in Namibia and also thanked parents for their unwavering commitment towards the growth of this particular sporting discipline.

The trio of Shakira Stey, Diago Brandt and Freddy Mwila junior ranks among Namibia’s medal hopefuls and only the colour of those medals needs to be determined.
