Kavango Eliminate Hosts to Reach Final

The Kavango Region reached their first ever Newspaper Cup final after outclassing Oshikoto 2 – 1 in an enthralling semi-final on Saturday.

The home side were slight favourites to win the contest after reaching the last four stage by topping Group A, however Group C runner up Kavango were brimming with confidence after securing their semi-final berth when they thumped holders Otjozondjupa 3 – 1 in their final group match.

The game started off at a frantic pace, as both teams attempted to get the early initiative, much to the delight of the packed stadium at the Oscar Norich Stadium.

Oshikoto were the first to muster meaningful attempts on goal but failed to convert their chances.

They were to rue those missed chances as Kavango responded with several attacks of their own but were temporarily denied a goal by Oshikoto keeper Kleophas Nangolo, as the sides went in goalless at halftime.

Their persistence was rewarded early in the second half featured when Kavango’s Matuku Incencius finished off a brilliant counter attack.

With a goal behind, Oshikoto went on the offensive and came close to equalising but were again let down by poor finishing, the woodwork and superb defending by Kavango.

The game was effectively over as a contest when the tournament’s joint-top scorer Ndalipo Risto, found the back of the net to put his side 2 – 0 up.

With the game close to conclusion, the hosts pulled one back thanks to Malakia Kanime ‘s long range strike.

The Kavango boys celebrated their victory wildly, as it marked a historic first-ever finals appearance.

Makuti Risto from Kavango received the man of the match prize from NFA’s Oshana vice-chairman Beatus Nandago.
