Khomas Beat Karas for First Win

KHOMAS registered their first victory at the Namibian Newspaper Cup when they beat Karas 3-2 in the final match of the first day’s play on Friday.

Marley Engelbrech gave Karas an early lead but Khomas struck back with two goals in four minutes by Dino da Silva and Fernando Musambani to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Musambani scored his second goal 10 minutes after the break to put Khomas 3-1 ahead, but Karas pulled a late goal back through Quinton van Staden to make the final score 3-2.

Khomas came out attacking with Dino da Silva hitting the upright early on, but it was Karas who took the lead on 16 minutes when Marley Engelbrech scored from a quick counterattack.

Khomas piled on the pressure in search of the equaliser, but Karas’ keeper Sevedius Apollus was in fine form and brought off good saves to deny Da Silva and Riuoua Kamutuezu in quick succession, while Romario Djavera also hit the post from a free kick.

Khomas’ pressure paid off with two goals in quick succession. Da Silva scored the equaliser on 20 minuted when he ran onto a high ball to slot home from close range, while Musambani put them 2-1 ahead four minutes later with a similar goal, running on to a high ball to slot home from close range.

Karas came out attacking in the second half and Marley Engelbrech had an early volley saved while Reyneldo Blaauw blasted over from a free kick.

But it was Khomas who increased their lead to 3-1 on 39 minutes when Musambani scored from a quick counterattack.

Khomas keeper Viril Namaseb brought off fine saves from Glen April and Engelbrech but Quinton van Staden finally scored for Karas in the last minute to make the final score 3-2 in favour of Khomas.

Khomas striker Fernandes Musambani won the man of the match award.
